75 arrests over weekend
Port Alfred police arrested 75 people for various crimes over the weekend, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.
Captain Mali Govender said the arrests were for crimes including murder, rape, attempted rape and possession of dagga.
The ages of those arrested ranged from 21 to 40, said Govender.
They were expected to appear in Port Alfred Magistrate's Court on Monday and Tuesday.

anybody know what area's are the hot spots???
We would like to spend a few days in Port Alfred in Jan or March
next year but will not come if it is not safe.

Hi, Most those arrested were for being "drunk and disorderly", something that can be expected this time of the year. Just come and enjoy!

I can handle drunks as long as they are not violent.
I see there have been a few rapes,murders etc as well. Will it be safe
for us to walk around in the town and at the beaches after hours??
We visited PA in the early 90's and it was great. Visited again in 2008
and the place was filthy!! What happened???

Hi,
We spent many years visiting Port Alfred and the children looked forward to this annual holiday with great anticipation. It was safe, clean, great fun and built many memoroes for us as families.
That has now all changed - we decided to take a trip there this year (3 Jan 2010) and with much anticipation and the need to really relax after a hadardous year for all of us we arrived at our rented house on the river.
Well, the thieve let us settle in and unpack the first night and on the second night, with us all in the house, they forced their way in and stole about R45,000 worth of our belongings including a lap top (which my newphew HAd to bring with in order to work), phones, wallets, glasses, 3 drivers licenses, everyone's bank cards and a bag of mine which is utterly useless to anyone, which contained my passport, vehicle papers, and Botswana residence, work and import permits. I am now unable to return to Botswana as I have no travel documents! Local residents told us that they are virtual prisoners in their own homes as crime is so out of control in Port Alfred.
SO, if you have fond memories of Port Alfred from days gone by, keep it that way - do NOT return as you will be bitterly diappointed and your memories will be ruined - Port Alfred is a dismal shadow of its former self and we will never return!

Thank goodness we did not go to PA, drinking on the beaches,thieves
breaking in to house's while people are in them!!!! Place sounds like
gangsters paradise!!!
This sounds shocking - thanks Talk for getting the news out there instead of painting a pretty picture for the sake of advertisers and others. At least we are informed of the truth of the seaside "paradise", but don't let anyone fool you that it is any better anywhere else - this country is decaying bit by bit, some places quicker than others, and what are the authorities doing? Zilch. There is no regard for human rights, life or people's hard earned posessions.
